”The NATURAL method for playing a brass instrument boils down to the following points:
(a) FLEXIBILITY OF THE LIPS
(b) STRENGTH OF FACIAL MUSCLES ABOUT THE MOUTH, CHIN AND JAWS
(c) EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE TONGUE
(d) POWER FROM THE DIAPHRAGM.
There are no tricks to this method, nor are there any short cuts. They follow only the principles governing sound production. Lip vibration produce sound; the lips, then must be brought to a soft, pliant, vibrant state whereby the may be easily controlled and regulated. Control comes with development, training, and co-ordination of the many sets of muscles going to make up embouchure. The tongue must be trained for accuracy, developed for strength. The power for brilliant tone, for endurance, must come form the only source – the “powerhouse.”
The whole method of natural playing depends upon your attitude, your work. This is where you “make or brake.” This is where hte patience comes in! When you followed that you are going to learn how to produce a sound – a good sound! You have heard the expression “Well begun is half done.” Keep that in mind!
