纵观卡拉丝的演唱生涯，真正璀灿出色的，是从1953年开始之后的十年。在这十年内，她快速地从胖嘟嘟的希腊女孩摇身变为时尚名流，也从默默无名的小歌手快速站上史卡拉歌剧院，成为当时最顶尖的女高音。在明白了自己的能力和特色后，卡拉丝很快就调整脚步，除普契尼的歌剧外，主要的戏码都锁定美声歌剧，在她的手中，这些原本沦为花腔女高音卖弄高音的剧码，获得了生命力和戏剧张力，重新获得深度。

这六张CD收录了卡拉丝演唱生涯最璀璨的录音作品，其中两份录音是她最拿手的“美声”歌剧剧目，这套两百年前上演的剧码，今天之所以依然能在现代歌剧院中依然演出，主要就是靠卡拉丝在1950年代的全力演出，是她让美声歌剧从小巧、花腔的浮夸演出方式，脱胎成为有生命、有血有泪的感人演出风格，而让这些歌剧得以在现代重新受到世人喜爱，这也是她影响后世女高音最深的地方；在她之后，没有人再用那种卖弄花腔的肤浅方式诠释这些角色；第二、三片则收录她演唱义大利浪漫歌剧史上最重要的两位作曲家威尔第和普契尼的歌剧咏叹调。卡拉丝是希腊在美国移民第二代，义大利语并不是她的母语，但是她却能够靠著演唱义大利歌剧站稳观众品味最挑剔的米兰史卡拉歌剧院，在这两位作曲家歌剧剧码的演唱实力，尤其是威尔第，正是她受到义大利观众欣赏的地方。最后两片则是卡拉丝并未在舞台上演出，但却演唱得特别有她风格的代表作；上述“费城”的主题曲，也在其中。

The famous baritone Tito Gobbi once said: ‘There is only one Callas’, and all aspects of her unique art are represented here in these 6 CDs of her best and most popular operatic arias and duets.
CD1 – THE OPERAS OF BELLINI
This CD contains extracts from four of the most important operas in Callas’s stage repertoire, namely La sonnambula, I puritani, Il pirata and Norma. These ‘bel canto’ operas represent the peak of Callas’s musical and dramatic achievement and are what set her apart from all other sopranos of her day. Norma was the opera Callas performed on stage more than any other and it was the one she found most challenging and most satisfying. The aria ‘Casta Diva’ has been heard in two recent films, most notably The Bridges of Madison County, and has also been used in several TV commercials in the UK.
CD2 – THE OPERAS OF DONIZETTI AND ROSSINI
Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor was another of Callas’s great stage successes and it includes the impressive sextet ‘Chi mi frena’ and the famous ‘Mad Scene’. The other Donizetti operas represented here are Anna Bolena and L’elisir d’amore, while the Rossini titles include the only comic operas that Callas ever undertook on stage, namely The Barber of Seville and Il turco in Italia. Also heard here are arias from Rossini’s Cenerentola and Semiramide.
CD3 – THE OPERAS OF VERDI
Callas performed a surprising number of Verdi operas on the stage and this album covers a wide selection from the most popular ones such as La traviata, Il trovatore and Rigoletto to the grander and more powerful works like Don Carlo, Macbeth and Aida.
CD4 – THE OPERAS OF PUCCINI
Callas made highly successful recordings of all the best-loved items from the whole canon of popular Puccini operas and they are all represented here, from Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Tosca and Madam Butterfly, through to Suour Angelica, Gianni Schicchi and Turandot.
CD5 – FRENCH OPERATIC HEROINES
On the operatic stage Callas sang only in Italian, but in the recording studio she demonstrated a striking affinity for the French language and made a number of outstanding recordings of arias from some of the greatest French operas including Carmen, Manon, Faust, Roméo et Juliette, Samson et Dalila, Mignon and Louise, all of which are represented here.
CD6 – DRAMATIC HEROINES
To conclude this set, the final CD brings together some of the most powerful recordings Callas ever made, with such dramatic titles as ‘Suicidio!’ from La Gioconda, ‘La mamma morta’ from Andrea Chénier (used so memorably in the film Philadelphia), ‘Voi lo sapete, o mamma’ from Cavalleria rusticana, ‘Or sai chi l’onore’ from Don Giovanni and many others.
